Now that Disneyland has been open for 70 years, it’s a natural time to reflect on what Disney has done well during the last 7 decades – and the biggest Disneyland mistakes in California made during this period.
Whilst Disneyland wasn’t perfect when it opened on July 17th, 1955, it was the first of its kind – and and incredible theme park that has improved with additions (within and after Walt’s lifetime).
However, in the 21st century, there’s some really disappointing Disneyland mess ups which made the Disneyland experience worse than they would’ve been previously.
Whether you’re considering visiting Disneyland again for the first time in decades, or considering if it’s worth visiting Disneyland for the first time, let’s discuss!
This post is all about the 5 significant Disneyland mistakes that made the parks worse in the last 25 years, and deciding if you should even visit Disneyland in 2025 and beyond.
Disneyland Mistakes
1) Disney California Adventure Park (even after the updates & additions as of now)
After visiting Disneyland for the first time in 2024, I discovered something interesting: Disneyland is one of the best Disney Parks I’ve ever visited (as someone who’s visited all Disney Parks in America and Europe, but none in Asia).
However, Disney California – the second park opposite Disneyland Park – is one of the worst Disney Parks I’ve ever visited.
When it opened in 2001, people were downright baffled. Why build a California-themed park in the middle of, well, California?
The rides felt cheap compared to the magic next door, and the immersive, storytelling lands just wasn’t there.
Sure, Disney tried to fix things with Cars Land, Pixar Pier, and Avengers Campus.
Whilst Cars Land is objectively impressive, Pixar Pier and Avengers Campus just feel like cheap re-themes that don’t feel as put together as lands in Disneyland Park – like Fantasyland or Tomorrowland, for example.
For all the money and effort, DCA has never been able to shake that “off-brand” feel at Disneyland.
That said, DCA isn’t necessarily a skippable park for everyone.
Some of the highlights of DCA include:
- Grizzly River Run (but beware that you can get soaked on this, which was not ideal in winter!).

- Radiator Springs Racers (it’s similar but better than Test Track at Epcot, Walt Disney World, due to the better storytelling and more picturesque location. Just be aware that wait times can get really high here, if you don’t start lining up during Early Entry for on-site guests or if you don’t opt for the paid Single Pass Lightning Lane – more on this later).
- Soarin’ Around the World or Soaring’ Over California (depending on what they’re showing during your visit) – Both versions of this attraction are super impressive. The queue here is so much better than Epcot’s!
- The Bakery Tour (I will never turn down free sourdough bread 😂)
2) The Walt Disney Animatronic
I’m sorry, I couldn’t not mention one of the most recent Disneyland Mistakes that we’ve all been talking about!
To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Disneyland, there is a new show, Walt Disney – A Magical Life – starring Walt Disney. Well, an audio-animatronic meant to look and sound like Walt Disney, telling stories from his life.
This is located at the Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln theatre (that show is currently unavailable – but Disney has announced that they will be shown on a rotating basis in the future – timeframe TBC).
However, there’s one major problem: the animatronic doesn’t look enough like Walt to be convincing.
And to make things worse, on its opening day, the Walt Disney animatronic broke down!
Whilst it could’ve been cool to see a “realistic” Walt Disney animatronic speaking to audiences, it’s so difficult to get it right that maybe they should’ve saved themselves the time, money and bad publicity.

3) Thoughtless IP in the Disneyland Parks
IP has been included at Disneyland since day one (think Peter Pan’s Flight and Snow White and Her Adventures).
There is nothing inherently wrong with seeing Disney Characters incorporated in the parks.
But now it seems like Disney is just throwing IP into the parks without doing it as well as possible.
Cars Land was a good use of IP in Disney California Adventure (even as someone who knows very little about the movies, I could appreciate the land).
But Marvel Avengers Campus is just a bland area of the park with some Marvel characters thrown in here and there.
Pixar Pier wasn’t necessarily a massive step up from Paradise Pier. Whether there are plenty of Pixar characters or not, this is still a “cheap-looking” area of the park, resembling non-premium amusement parks.
In summary, there’s more to theming than throwing in a little IP here and there, as if that’s the main ingredient needed in an incredible Disneyland attraction or land.
4) Overly Complicated Disneyland Reservation & Lightning Lane Systems
Now time for the most expensive of the Disneyland mistakes on this list (and one that constantly comes up in Disneyland bad reviews).
If you haven’t visited Disneyland in years, you may be unpleasantly surprised.
The old days of showing up with your ticket and strolling into the park are long gone.
Now you need a park reservation in addition to your valid ticket just to get through the gate (this includes all guests – not just Magic Key holders).
That’s only the first hurdle.
Once inside, if you purchase Lightning Lanes, there’s another layer of complexity to your Disney day!
You can’t just hop on your favorite ride. You have to pick time slots, scroll through the app, and cross your fingers that you’re quick enough to snag a spot before the ones you want all disappear.
The worst part is that you have to pay for Lightning Lanes (the free paper Fastpasses are long gone).
You can purchase the Multi Pass (which you can use up to one time on each available attraction; it doesn’t include ALL Disneyland attractions), or the Single Pass (for one attraction – either Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland Park or Radiator Springs Racers at DCA).
Prices will vary depending on when you visit.
Frequently Asked Questions Related to Disneyland Mistakes
What not to miss at Disneyland?
Sadly, there’s no one-size fits all answer to this. It will depend on the season and length of your visit, as well as your attraction preferences.
I recommend researching the attractions at Disneyland that will be available during your visit. Then you can create a “to-do list” or a rough itinerary/priority list.

The 1955 opening of Disneyland was hectic to say the least. There were people entering with counterfeit tickets to food running out and more!
