Remember the magic and excitement of the Hollywood Studios Opening Day on May 1st, 1989?Â
Well, as a Gen Z, I donât. However, I also wasnât around for the Opening Day of Magic Kingdom – but riding Jungle Cruise and âitâs a small worldâ makes me feel like Iâm stepping in a time machine back to 1971.
Whether or not you remember or visited Hollywood Studios in 1989, maybe you want to experience some classic Hollywood Studios attractions in 2024.
Sure, the relatively new additions (from Toy Story Land to Galaxyâs Edge and more) have made Hollywood Studios less of a âhalf-day parkâ.Â
But today, let’s go back to basics and talk about the attractions that have existed for decades – the ones that helped to make Hollywood Studios the Disney Park we still know and love today.
After all, Disney World has just celebrated the Hollywood Studios 35th anniversary – so it’s the perfect time to reflect on the beginning of the park!
This post is all about which (if any) Hollywood Studios Opening Day attractions are still operating today, in 2024.
Hollywood Studios Opening Day Attractions
A Brief History of Hollywood Studios
When did Hollywood Studios open?
Stepping into Hollywood Studios on its opening day, May 1, 1989, felt like walking onto a movie set. This park was all about celebrating the magic of the entertainment industry.Â
From movies and TV shows to music, Hollywood Studios aimed to show guests what happens behind the scenes.Â
It wasnât just about riding ridesâit was about experiencing the creative process in a fun and engaging way.
Hollywood Studios today feels more like IP city. Instead of the Behind-The-Scenes of the movies, youâre entering the âworldâ of Toy Story Land like a toy or Galaxyâs Edge like a character.
The Hollywood Studios Opening Day Attractions
On May 1st, 1989, the third Disney World park had a modest 5 Hollywood Studios Opening Day rides and shows which displayed the glamour and excitement of Hollywood.
Hollywood Studios List of Opening Day Attractions:
- The Great Movie Ride – This was more than just a rideâit was a journey through the history of cinema. Guests could hop into a vehicle and travel through scenes from classic films, feeling like they had stepped right into the movies themselves. This attraction closed in 2017.
- Hollywood Backlot Tour – This tour was a behind-the-scenes look at how movies were made. Visitors could see real sets, props, and maybe even witness some special effects magic. It was like lifting the curtain on the wizard’s workshop. This BTS attraction closed in 2014 to make room for Toy Story Land and some areas of Galaxy’s Edge.
- Magic of Disney Animation – Ever wondered how your favorite Disney characters come to life? This attraction allowed guests to peek behind the curtain of the animation process – until 2004.
- SuperStar Television – Imagine being a part of your favorite TV shows! This unique show invited guests to step into classic television scenes, making them feel like stars for a day.Â
- Monster Sound Show –This show demonstrated how sound effects are added to movies – providing another behind-the-scenes look into the industry – but only until 1997.
These attractions weren’t just ridesâthey were full experiences that immersed guests in the world of showbiz.Â
They blended education with entertainment, something Hollywood Studios has seemingly given up on with their latest additions.

There Are NO Opening Day Attractions Still Operating
Despite the nostalgia that opening day attractions bring, none of the original Hollywood Studios attractions from May 1, 1989, are still operating, as of 2024. And sadly, this has been the case for nearly 7 years.
However, there are several attractions that have opened in the parkâs initial years that still thrill and entertain guests.
Let’s take a closer look at these long-lasting, fan-favorite experiences.
Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!
Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! has been captivating audiences since its introduction on August 25th, 1989 – just a few months after the park opened.Â
This live-action show brings the thrilling exploits of Indiana Jones to life, showcasing spectacular stunts and jaw-dropping action sequences.Â
Guests are drawn into the adventurous world of the iconic archaeologist, feeling the rush as stunts unfold right before their eyes.Â
It remains a must-watch for both long-time fans and first-time visitors.
Star Tours
Star Tours has been a staple for Star Wars enthusiasts since its debut in 1989.Â
This 3D motion simulator ride takes guests on a thrilling journey through the Star Wars galaxy, featuring beloved characters and amazing locations from the films. Its immersive storytelling and state-of-the-art effects keep fans coming back for more.Â
Despite changes and updates over the years (becoming Star Wars – The Adventure Continues on May 20th, 2011), its charm and excitement have remained constant, making it a timeless attraction.
Although this attraction is more overlooked since the opening of Galaxyâs Edge (with Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Rise of the Resistance).
I mean, I visited Hollywood Studios during the opening week of Galaxyâs Edge (before Rise of the Resistance had even opened) – and there was a cast member outside Star Tours trying to persuade people to go to that attraction.
Granted, this did coincide with Hurricane Dorian, but Star Tours almost always has a VERY short wait time.
Because of this, it wouldnât be surprising if this is the next attraction to go. Which would be unfortunate, as it genuinely is a fun attraction – which almost feels like a combination of a ride and a show.

Muppet*Vision 3D
While Muppet*Vision 3D wasnât there on opening day, it has been a central part of Hollywood Studios since its launch, on May 16th, 1991.Â
This delightful show blends the Muppetsâ signature humor with advanced 3D technology to create an entertaining experience for all ages.Â
Stepping into the whimsical world of the Muppets, guests are treated to a hilarious and heartwarming performance that stands the test of time.Â
Itâs an attraction that proves that charm and comedy never go out of style.
Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage
Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage first graced Hollywood Studios on November 22nd, 1991.Â
This Broadway-style musical features enchanting performances, vibrant costumes, and stunning sets that bring the beloved fairy tale to life.Â
The show retells the classic story of Belle and the Beast with musical numbers that leave audiences singing along.Â
Over the years, it has consistently enchanted visitors with its timeless tale and spectacular production values.
Unfortunately, this is performed outside, so it can be uncomfortable to watch in summer – but there are fans, so if you can bear it if youâre taking a summer trip – this is a fun, classic show.
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is perhaps one of the most iconic attractions at Hollywood Studios to this day.Â
Introduced on July 22nd, 1994, this thrilling drop ride offers a spine-chilling plunge into the mysterious Hollywood Tower Hotel.Â
The attraction combines immersive storytelling with intense thrills, as riders are taken on a suspenseful journey through âThe Twilight Zone.â Its eerie ambiance and heart-pounding drops make it a standout experience that continues to draw thrill-seekers from all over.
Ta Ta For Now
Reflecting on the history of Hollywood Studios and its opening day attractions, it’s clear that while none of the original rides and shows from May 1, 1989, are still in operation, the park still has a few âclassicâ and older attractions.Â
Hollywood Studios’ opening day attractions set a foundation of immersive entertainment, blending education with fun in unique ways. Even as the park changes drastically (and not necessarily always for the better), the spirit of those early days lives on in small ways.Â
