Loungefly Disney bags aren’t always as good as they sound, and can often be a waste of money.
Okay, I know this is an unpopular opinion. But is it invalid?
Since 2019, I have been collecting these bags (primarily Loungefly Disney backpacks), and I got my last one in May 2024.
I am not boycotting Loungefly Disney bags – and I’m not recommending that you do either. (I am also not judging any one for collecting Loungefly bags!).
However, these bags are not usually cheap (unless you find a Loungefly Disney sale).
Whether you’re one of the most dedicated Loungefly Disney collectors, or you’re considering purchasing your first Loungefly Disney Mini Backpack, here are some things you should think about first!
This post is all about why Loungefly Disney bags may be overhyped and not worth your money.
Loungefly Disney
What is Disney Loungefly?
This is a popular line of fashion accessories inspired by Disney characters and themes.
There are also some items that are exclusive to Disney Parks (often Disney World and Disneyland, but you can also find a more limited selection at Disneyland Paris).
Here are some items that are available:
- Loungefly Disney Mini Backpacks.
- Loungefly Disney Backpacks (larger than the Mini Backpacks).
- Loungefly Disney Purse / Wallets.
- Loungefly Disney Ears (Minnie / Mickey ears to match your bag).
- Loungefly Disney Pins
I am speaking mainly about the Disney backpacks today, but it’s worth knowing that they offer other products.
Why do people collect Loungefly backpacks?
- They are so cute!
- They are fun to wear to Disney Parks (or even in real life if you’re a loud and proud Disney fan!).
- You can get Disney Parks’ exclusive Disney bags that can remind you of your awesome trip!
- You can make your own Loungefly display in your house (like your own gift shop!).
- And many more reasons. If you have a Loungefly Disney backpack collection, let us know the reasons you love collecting them!
1) The Price Tag vs. Actual Value
Most of these bags will cost over $70 (assuming there isn’t a Loungefly Disney backpacks sale). It’s not unheard of for some of these backpacks to exceed $100!
If you’re only going to use these bags occasionally (maybe just at Disney Parks), is this really money well-spent?
Well, maybe not …
I bought a non-Loungefly Disney backpack for about $50 in the Emporium at Magic Kingdom in August 2024.
Is this bag as cute? No, but it’s a lot cheaper – and more practical. It’s even got a pouch for Minnie / Mickey ears (most Loungefly Mini Backpacks don’t have this feature).
Unless you *really* want a certain design, you may be able to find a non-Loungefly Disney bag that is just as good – if not better – in quality.
2) Less Exciting Designs
If you’ve been following these releases for a while, you’ll probably remember when the Disney Parks Rose Gold Mini Backpack was released.
It took the Disney world by storm (pun intended).
It sold out within a day, came back and is still being sold today.
Since then, the well-known company has released at least hundreds of Disney bags.
After a certain point, the offerings start to feel a little boring. The Loungefly market feels kind of oversaturated.
Have *all* the best Disney Loungefly bags already been released? Probably not.
But it’s hard for them to release super unique backpacks, when they’ve released Disney bags at such a rapid rate over the last few years.
Have you seen a super interesting design lately?
3) Loungefly Mini Backpacks can be impractical
In my post – 5 Reasons Why You Need A Disney Parks Loungefly Bag For Your Next Trip – I talk about how the Mini Backpacks make perfect park bags.
I mention how they fit the essentials.
This isn’t untrue, but it depends on your “essentials”.
If it’s summer and you need to carry a water bottle, rain poncho, fan, cool towels in a Loungefly bag (on top of your other belongings) you may struggle.
That being said, you may be able to just make it work, but it may not be easy.
Especially if you want to store Mickey or Minnie ears in your bag when you go on an attraction (like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, where there aren’t pouches for small belongings on the ride).
That being said, if you’re visiting in winter or just don’t generally need to carry much in your Disney Park bag, this won’t be a problem for you.
And if you opt for one of the larger Loungefly Disney backpacks (instead of a Mini Backpack), this may not be a problem.
4) The FOMO Effect
Have you ever felt like you might be missing out on something special, just because everyone else seems to have it?
If you follow a lot of Disney influencers on social media, you probably have seen Loungefly bags. A lot.
From cute outfits featuring the latest Loungefly backpack to extensive collection videos, it’s pretty easy to feel influenced!
(I know that from half a decade of collecting Loungefly bags!).
But just because everyone’s talking (and in some cases promoting) them, doesn’t mean you need it.
Do your research, look at all your options and then decide if Loungefly bags are right for you as an individual.
5) You have to protect Loungefly Mini Backpacks carefully
Loungefly backpacks can get out of shape pretty quickly.
You need to store them in a safe place, where they don’t get squashed! Ideally, you need to put some small belongings in the bags, so they can keep their shape.
It’s not the end of the world, but you have to be more mindful when storing them – which can be mildly annoying.
Frequently Asked Questions about Loungefly Disney Bags
1) Why are Loungefly bags so expensive?
They are generally great quality, and they have more interesting designs than a lot of other brands selling Disney bags.
2) What makes a Loungefly backpack rare?
If it was limited edition, hasn’t been re-released and is not being actively sold (at Disney Parks or online), this bag is more likely to be rare.
3) Can Loungeflys get wet?
Loungefly bags can be water-resistant, but they may not be ideal if there’s super heavy rain.
This can vary, so make sure to check before you buy a Loungefly backpack, if this is important to you.
4) Are Loungefly bags real leather?
Loungefly bags tend to be made from vegan faux leather, but I’d recommend checking just in case, if the material is important to you.
5) Are Loungeflys still popular?
Yes, people are still buying them. That being said, there has yet to be a Loungefly bag as iconic and popular as the Rose Gold Mini Backpack in 2018.
But there’s no sign of these bags losing popularity in any super significant way.
Loungefly bags are definitely not a trend that we left behind in the late 2010s.
6) Where can I buy Disney Loungefly?
You can buy these products at several different retailers. Always check that the retailer is legit!
- Disney Store (US)
- Disney Store (UK)
- Hot Topic
- BoxLunch
