What to do to Prepare for Disney World

1) Watch the Best Movies & Series on Disney+ Before You Leave

Have you ever watched a Disney World parade and not recognised a character?

Ever been on a ride and not fully understood the storyline?

I’m someone who didn’t recognise the Wreck It Ralph characters at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party in 2022.

I also who went on Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid numerous times before watching the animated movie.

I have to say the attractions are way more interesting when you know the characters and storylines beforehand!

Now, have I watched every Disney movie that appears in the park (in some way)? No.

But, I try to watch some Disney movies before my trips. It’s a great, fun way.

You could even watch Disney movies whilst you’re packing for your Disney vacation!

Not a movie person? Disney has series too!

My favourite series are about the parks. The Imagineering Story tells you all about the imagineering of the parks throughout the decades.

If you’re interested in the behind-the-scenes of the Disney Parks, watch this!

Another great series is Behind the Attraction. This is exactly what it sounds like. Just want to watch one episode?

The one about The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is so fascinating!

2) Research New Attractions at Disney World

It’s no secret that Disney hasn’t been opening new attractions at an impressive rate (even with Universal Studios Orlando’s Epic Universe opening in 2025).

But, if you haven’t visited the parks in a while, chances are there will be some attractions you haven’t experienced before.

Here is a list of some of the newer attractions:

  • Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom (which replaced Splash Mountain).

  • TRON Lightcycle Run (the second roller coaster in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom).
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (the first and only roller coaster at Epcot, which replaced Ellen’s Energy Adventure).
  • Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana (a pretty walk-through attraction at Epcot).

3) Plan Your Outfits

From choosing comfy to cute clothes, this has to be one of the most exciting ways to prep for Disney World.

I recommend writing a Disney World packing list. But first, you should consider these things:

Clothing and Footwear Tips

When you’re preparing for Disney World, comfort should be your best friend. Imagine walking all day, maybe even running a bit to catch that parade. Now think about what you’re wearing.

Remember to consider the weather conditions. In summer, it’s SUPER hot and humid. You want comfortable tops and shorts/skorts.

In winter, it can be unpredictable. Some days, you might get away with summer clothes. Others, it’s coats and jeans.

Want to plan some cute outfits? Consider these things:

  • If you have a Disney bag (e.g. a cute Loungefly backpack), are you going to make sure your clothes match well?

  • Are you going to plan certain outfits for certain parks (e.g. cute animal prints for Animal Kingdom)?
  • Are you wearing Mickey or Minnie ears, or other Disney accessories?
  • If you’re going in a group, are you going to wear matching shirts on some days?

4) Play Around & Learn the My Disney Experience App

This isn’t hard but it can be a bit of a nuisance, if you don’t know what you’re doing.

I recommend taking 10-15 minutes to read a helpful guide on My Disney Experience.

After all, you’ll want to be familiar with some of the Disney World mobile app features.

Once you’ve learned the basics, it can be exciting, because you know you’re preparing for your Disney trip!

The main important things to learn on My Disney Experience are:

  • How to view attraction wait times.
  • How to link and view your Disney World tickets.
  • How to link a hotel reservation (if staying at an on-site Disney hotel).
  • How to mobile order food.
  • How to make dining reservations.
  • How to join Virtual Queues for valid attractions (currently Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy – Cosmic Rewind).
  • How to purchase and book Lightning Lane Passes (if you plan on this).

5) Plan Where You Want to Dine on Your Disney World Trip

Disney World literally has hundreds of dining options. Here are some ways to make sure you dine like a pro at Disney World.

Consider Advance Dining Reservations

Interesting in dining at premium dining locations?

These table service locations allow you to book up to 60 days in advance, giving you a head start on securing a table at some of the most sought-after places.

Choose Between Quick-Service and Table-Service

When deciding where to eat, think about whether you prefer quick-service or table-service meals.

Quick-service spots are great for a bite on the go—ideal for when you want to maximize ride time. Eating at quick-service locations can also save you a lot of money.

On the other hand, table-service restaurants can offer a more relaxed and thematic dining experience.

Speaking of …

Don’t Miss Out on Themed Dining

Disney World is famous for its themed dining experiences that transport you to different worlds.

Maybe consider a meal at the Coral Reef Restaurant, where you can dine with an underwater view, or go to Space 220 for an out of this world experience (pun absolutely intended).

Remember Not to Overlook Dining at Bars/Lounges

We all talk about quick service table service locations, but Disney’s bars and lounges don’t always get enough attention.

They can offer food that is usually cheaper than table service locations (and sometimes even on par with quick service restaurants), in an even nicer environment (a lot of the time).

You don’t always have to make reservations at bars and lounges (though at some popular locations, it may be advised. Always do your reseach if there are specific lounges and bars you’d like to visit).

Consider Character Dining

Want to meet characters and avoid ridiculously long queues? Character dining is the perfect answer!

You get to eat a meal whilst meeting a few characters without waiting in line!

Character dining experiences occur at table service locations, so make sure to book these reservations 60 days in advance!

What should I pack for a Disney World trip?

Pack comfortable clothing and shoes (ideally sneakers you’ve been wearing for a little while), a higher SPF sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle (you can get free paper cups of water that can be used to refill your water bottle).

Don’t forget rain gear like ponchos, especially in summer.

Bring a backpack or small bag to carry your Disney Park essentials.

Is the Disney Dining Plan worth it?

If you like to pre-pay your food and you want that peace of mind, maybe.

If you’re planning a trip to Disney World on a budget, then probably not.

It is rare that the Disney Dining plan will save you money, but it’s always worth doing your research before deciding if it’s worth it for you.

How do I make dining reservations?

Use the Disney World app or website to book reservations up to 60 days in advance.

Popular table service/bar locations fill quickly, so plan your dining as soon as possible.
