âRent DVC points. It will save you so much money!â
Have you heard this before?
If youâve ever planned a US Disney vacation, Iâm guessing you have.
Although itâs seemingly confusing (especially if youâre not familiar with Disney Vacation Club), can it save you money?
Is it difficult? Can it actually allow you to stay at Deluxe Resorts like the Polynesian at Disney World and Grand Californian at Disneyland on a more realistic budget (sometimes 50% + less than Disneyâs hotel rates).
After my experience of renting points multiple times, let’s talk all about renting DVC points!
This post is all about answering the question: why can you save so much money if you rent DVC points?
Rent DVC Points
Understanding the Disney Vacation Club (DVC)
Disney Vacation Club is Disney’s version of a timeshare program.
When you’re a DVC member, you buy a set number of points that you can use to book vacations at Disney resorts.
Each year, members receive an allocation of points that they can use to book at different DVC resorts (and in some cases other resorts, but if youâre renting points, it will be at one of the Disney Vacation Club resorts).
How DVC Points Work
DVC Points operate as a flexible vacation currency tailored for Disney aficionados. Let’s break down how they work:
- Earning and Accumulating Points: As a DVC member, you purchase a set number of points based on the initial contract. These points are renewed each year.
- Using Points: You can spend your points across different Disney Vacation Club resorts. The number of points required per night depends on factors such as the resort’s location, the accommodation type, and the season.
- Booking Process: Booking with DVC is straightforward. You decide your destination, check the points chart, and book your stay using your accumulated points (this is the booking process for the member – we will talk in a moment about the booking process for the renter).
Points can vary significantly. For instance, a night stay might cost more points during peak seasons compared to off-peak times.
The Savings that come with Renting DVC Points
Renting DVC Points can be a great way to experience premium Disney resorts at a fraction of the traditional cost.
Cost Comparison with Traditional Disney Resorts
- Nightly Rates: Renting DVC Points typically allows you to save up to 65% off standard hotel rates at Deluxe Resorts (according to DVC Rental Store).
- Taxes and Fees: Renting DVC Points often excludes hotel taxes that can add up when booking standard rooms. This could save you an additional 12-15% on top of nightly rates. (Please note that you do have to pay transient taxes when renting DVC points for The Villas at Disneyland Hotel and Aulani, Disney Vacation Club Villas, Ko Olina, Hawaiâi)
- Longer Stays for Less: With the savings on nightly rates, it’s often possible to extend your vacation without breaking the bank. Imagine staying for 7 nights and only paying for what would have been 3-4 nights at a regular resort when you book through Disney directly.
Availability of Accommodations
What about the variety of places you can stay? Renting DVC Points opens doors to different types of accommodations that you might not typically consider.
- Wide Range of Choices: From cozy studios to spacious villas, renting points allows access to various room types. You can find something that fits your needs, whether traveling solo or with a large family.

- Premium Locations: Many DVC accommodations are situated in prime locations within the Disney resorts. For example, every Monorail resort has DVC studios and villas (and it can easily cost $600+ – or even thousands – per night to stay on the monorail. So, if you can save hundreds per night by renting points, itâs a huge benefit!).
- Unique Experiences: Ever dreamt of lodging at a resort like very few others – like at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge – where you can wake up to a savanna with real animals?! Renting points can make that happen – at a reasonable price (often a similar price to a moderate – or sometimes, even value – resort – this depends on the type of accommodation and resort you’re choosing).
How do you rent DVC points?
Finding a Reputable Rental Agency – Where can I rent DVC points?
Whilst you can technically rent DVC points directly from owners, there is a potential for a scam to take place.
To make the process as simple and secure as possible, I recommend renting DVC points through an agency. Even if this is more expensive, it can also give you peace of mind (which is especially important the first time you are renting DVC points).
When it comes to renting DVC points, finding a trusted rental agency is essential. There are a few well-known agencies that many Disney vacationers trust. Here are some reputable options:
- David’s Vacation Club Rentals: This is one of the largest and most trusted sources for DVC rentals. It was the first company I ever used to rent DVC points and have had nothing but great experiences with them. I have rented through this agency twice and my family has also had great experiences with this company.
- DVC Rental Store: Known for flexible payment options and excellent cancellation policies, this is another popular choice among travelers. Personally, I have rented points twice from DVC Rental Store, and had great experiences.
- DVC Shop Rentals: A lesser known but also good agency is DVC Shop Rentals. I have used this agency to book a confirmed reservation and had a positive experience. Generally, this company has the most choice if youâre looking for a confirmed reservation (more on confirmed vs new reservations later in this post).
- DVC-Rental.com: A company I have just used for the first time to book a confirmed reservation is DVC-Rental.com, who I have also had a good experience with.
To verify an agency’s legitimacy, consider the following tips:
- Check for reviews on independent sites.
- Confirm the agency’s credentials and length of operation.
- Ensure the website is secure and professional-looking.
Iâve Found a Good DVC Rental Company ⌠What Next?
Okay, so you know which company you want to book through – great!
Whatâs next is understanding the process.
Submitting Your DVC Request
From 11 months before your trip, you can rent DVC points.
You can go through a company, select the resort, room type and dates you want to stay there.
Please note that this is *not* booking your reservation. It is *requesting* your reservation.
This often entails you paying a refundable deposit of about $100 (varying slightly from company to company).
If there is DVC availability, the company will usually come back to you quickly to let you know. If there is not availability, they will let you know and refund your deposit (but make sure to check this is the case with the company you are booking through).
When they have found a DVC member who can book your trip, congratulations! Your DVC request has been granted.
With some companies, this will be where you pay in full for your reservation (be sure to check this with the company you are booking with).
Be aware that it can take weeks or even months to find a member who can book your reservation. And thereâs always a chance that your request wonât be granted.
For the best chance of finding a reservation, it is recommended to submit your request 11 months in advance – or at least before the 7-month mark (where availability usually gets more slim, as members can book outside of their home resort).
DVC Confirmed Reservation
An easier way to rent DVC points can be by booking DVC confirmed reservations.
This is where a member has booked a select resort, room type for a certain number of nights. None of the details of the bookings can be changed – except for the names of the guests.
This is not guaranteed but you can sometimes find great deals on last minute DVC reservations – which is helpful if youâre booking your Disney trip last minute.
Understanding Rental Contracts
Once you’ve found a rental agency, the next step is understanding the rental contract. This is crucial so you know what you’re getting into. Contracts might seem overwhelming, but they’re straightforward if you know what to look out for:
- Details of Stay: This includes your reservation dates, resort, and room type. Make sure all these are correct to avoid any surprises.
- Payment Terms: Understand when payments are due and the acceptable methods. Is there a deposit? When is the final payment due?
- Cancellation Policies: What happens if you need to cancel? Know the agencyâs policies so you can plan for unforeseen circumstances.
- Costs: A clear breakdown of what you’ll pay. Some contracts may include additional fees, so make sure you fully understand all costs involved.
By carefully choosing an agency and understanding your rental contract, you can enjoy your Disney vacation knowing youâve made a smart choice with your accommodations.
Potential Risks and Pitfalls
Renting DVC points can indeed be a fantastic way to save on Disney vacations, but like any good deal, it’s wise to be aware of potential risks.
Cancellation Policies and Flexibility
Vacations can be unpredictable. Knowing the cancellation policies and flexibility options for your DVC rental can save you from unnecessary stress later on.
- Understand the Policies: Each rental company has its own set of rules. It’s essential to fully understand these before you make a booking. For instance, some companies like DVC Rental Store and Davidâs Vacation Club Rentals offer more flexible cancellation and refund policies, whereas others may be more strict.
Final Verdict on Rent DVC Points
So, is renting DVC points too good to be true? Like most things, it depends on what you value in a vacation experience.
Pros:
- Cost Savings: This might be the most significant draw. Renting can save you substantial dollars compared to booking directly through Disney.
- Luxury Stays: Have you ever wanted to stay at a deluxe resort but couldn’t justify the cost? Renting points opens that door for around the same price as moderate (or sometimes value) resorts.
- Deluxe Resort Benefits: From Extended Evening Hours access twice a week (usually once at Magic Kingdom and once at Epcot – though occasionally held at Hollywood Studios or Animal Kingdom) to better amenities (e.g. swimming pools, fitness centers at most DVC resorts), thereâs lots to like.
- Deluxe Studios VS Hotel Rooms: Staying in a Deluxe Studio? Theyâre often considered to be better than traditional hotel rooms – thanks to the kitchenettes – with microwaves and toasters! If youâre staying in a Villa, you can enjoy a full kitchen, lounge and washer/dryer!).
- Flexibility: Access to various resorts and room styles means there’s something for everyone’s taste and budget.
Cons:
- Availability: DVC owners get first dibs, so your first choice might not always be available.
- Cancellation Policies: Renters may face stricter cancellation rules, which means flexibility might cost you.
